For over a decade, three names have defined a huge chunk of the Android experience in India and beyond: ColorOS, OxygenOS, and Realme UI. Each had its own personality and its own fanbase, even though all three came from the same parent company, BBK Electronics. That era appears to be coming to a close.

According to multiple reports citing a well-known smartphone tipster, OPPO is preparing one of the biggest restructurings in its history. The plan: retire both OxygenOS and Realme UI entirely, and move every future OnePlus and Realme smartphone over to a single, unified operating system — ColorOS.

This isn't a case of one skin borrowing features from another. It's a full consolidation. If the reports hold up, new OnePlus and Realme devices will simply run ColorOS out of the box, with no distinct software identity left behind.

The reports also point to bigger structural shifts — OnePlus reportedly narrowing its focus mainly to India and China, while Realme steps back from the Chinese market to concentrate on international markets. Service networks are also said to be merging, with OnePlus's after-sales support in India increasingly folding into OPPO's larger infrastructure.

This Didn't Come Out of Nowhere

If you've followed OnePlus closely, this shouldn't feel like a shock. Back in 2021, OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau announced that OnePlus and OPPO would merge their software codebases, aiming to combine OxygenOS's speed with ColorOS's feature depth. On paper the two stayed separate; in practice, the gap has been shrinking every year.

OnePlus already went through this once before — its Chinese skin HydrogenOS was quietly replaced by ColorOS years ago. What's being described now looks like the same playbook, applied globally.

Realme UI, meanwhile, was always built heavily on ColorOS's foundation, so for Realme users this shift is expected to feel more like a natural evolution than a sudden change.

Why Would OPPO Do This?

The logic is mostly financial. Running three separate Android skins across three brands means three engineering teams, three update cycles, and three sets of R&D costs. Merging them into one platform simplifies development and cuts costs significantly — appealing in a market where margins keep tightening.

What This Means for Users

For Realme users, the transition should be smooth, since Realme UI already shares so much DNA with ColorOS.

For OnePlus users, it's bigger. OxygenOS wasn't just software — it was the brand's identity. Clean design, minimal bloat, and a fast interface made OnePlus fans loyal in the first place. Even as OxygenOS drifted closer to ColorOS over the years, the name still carried weight. Losing it would mark a symbolic end to OnePlus's independent software experience.
